Building on the Rock
Scripture
“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock.”
—Matthew 7:24, KJV
Reflection
Every founder builds upon something. Some build upon ambition, financial security, recognition, personal ability, cultural trends, or the approval of others. These foundations can appear strong while circumstances remain favorable. Their weakness is revealed when pressure comes.
Jesus described two builders who constructed houses. From the outside, the houses may have appeared equally secure. The difference was hidden beneath them. One builder heard the words of Christ and obeyed them; the other heard His words but did not put them into practice. When the rain fell, the floods rose, and the winds struck, only the house built upon the rock remained standing.
The storm did not create the weakness in the second house—it exposed it.
The same is true in business. Financial challenges, slow seasons, rejected proposals, difficult customers, unexpected expenses, leadership conflicts, and delayed growth reveal what has been supporting the business all along. If your confidence rests entirely upon revenue, your peace will disappear when sales decline. If your identity rests upon recognition, you will begin questioning your worth when people overlook your work. If your direction depends upon trends, you may abandon your calling whenever the marketplace changes.
Christ must be more than the name associated with your business. He must be its foundation. Building upon Christ means that His Word governs how you lead, serve, price, market, hire, spend, partner, and grow. It means refusing profitable opportunities that require disobedience. It means treating people honorably when dishonesty would be easier. It means maintaining integrity when no customer, coach, employee, or follower is watching.
Jesus said the wise builder both hears and obeys. Biblical knowledge alone is not a foundation. The foundation is formed when truth becomes practice—when what you read in Scripture changes what you do in business.
Building on the Rock may initially feel slower because foundations require depth. God may spend more time developing your character than expanding your platform. He may strengthen your integrity before increasing your influence. He may teach you to manage a little before entrusting you with much. These seasons are not wasted. God is building beneath the surface so that future growth will not destroy you.
The goal is not to create a business that never experiences storms. The goal is to build one that remains faithful when they come. A business founded upon Christ may bend under pressure, but it will not have to abandon its identity, compromise its values, or separate from God to survive.
Before asking God to make your business larger, ask Him to make its foundation stronger.
Supporting Scripture
“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
—1 Corinthians 3:11, KJV
“The integrity of the upright shall guide them.”
—Proverbs 11:3, KJV
Business Application: Conduct a Foundation Audit
Examine the foundation beneath your business in the following areas:
Identity: Is your worth rooted in Christ or in business performance?
Purpose: Does your business exist to fulfill a calling or only to generate income?
Decision-making: Are your choices governed by Scripture, prayer, wisdom, or pressure?
Integrity: Are your marketing, pricing, promises, and business practices truthful?
Stewardship: Are you handling your time, money, gifts, and relationships responsibly?
Service: Does your business genuinely help people, or is it centered only on personal gain?
Obedience: Is there an instruction from God that you have heard but have not followed?
Choose the weakest area and write one change that would bring it into greater alignment with Christ. Complete that action before pursuing another growth goal.

Prayer Points for the Secret Place
1. Ask God to reveal your true foundation
“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts.”
—Psalm 139:23, KJV
Father, search my heart and reveal what I have truly been building upon. Expose every place where ambition, fear, money, recognition, or human approval has replaced my dependence upon You.
2. Establish your identity in Christ
“For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.”
—Colossians 3:3, KJV
Lord, anchor my identity in Christ. Help me remember that my worth does not rise with success or fall with disappointment.
3. Ask for obedience, not knowledge alone
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”
—James 1:22, KJV
Father, show me where I have heard Your Word without obeying it. Give me courage to practice the truth in every part of my business.
4. Pray for integrity
“The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.”
—Proverbs 20:7, KJV
Lord, make me a founder of integrity. Keep my words, promises, finances, leadership, and business practices honest before You and others.
5. Ask God to strengthen weak areas
“Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees.”
—Isaiah 35:3, KJV
Father, strengthen every weak area in my business. Repair what has been neglected before allowing me to build higher.
6. Ask for stability during storms
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
—Psalm 46:1, KJV
Lord, become my refuge when pressure comes. Keep me from making fearful, hurried, or dishonest decisions during difficult seasons.
7. Ask God to establish your work upon Christ
“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
—1 Corinthians 3:11, KJV
Father, establish this business upon Jesus Christ. Let His teachings govern its purpose, culture, decisions, relationships, and growth.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, You see beneath everything I have built. You know whether my foundation is Christ or whether I have depended upon ambition, money, recognition, personal strength, or the approval of others.
Search me and reveal every unstable place. Expose any area where I have heard Your Word but refused, delayed, or neglected obedience. Forgive me for building according to worldly measures while asking You to bless the result.
Lay a strong foundation within me before You expand the work around me. Develop the character required to carry the vision. Strengthen my integrity, purify my motives, and teach me to make decisions that honor You—even when obedience costs me an opportunity.
When storms come, keep my faith steady. Do not allow pressure to separate me from Your presence or persuade me to compromise. Let Jesus Christ remain the foundation of my identity, leadership, strategy, relationships, and business.
Build something through me that will remain faithful under pressure, fruitful through every season, and useful to Your Kingdom.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
